WYSIWYG Web authoring tools

These allow you to create a Web page visually (What You See Is What You Get). You draw the layout, type in the text and they do everything for you. However, unlike word processors they are designed for the job and so allow you to do much more.

Dreamweaver is the leader by a long way. It has the graphical interface for quick and easy jobs but then gives you a visual development environment where CSS appears as a properties panel, you can edit the code manually for fine tuning and it also deals well with graphics, JavaScript and PHP (which you may want to move onto later). It does cost quite a lot but educational discounts are good if you are a student.

One free alternative is NVU.

DO NOT USE EITHER OF THESE or any other WYSIWYG Web authoring tool yet. You are reading this because you want to learn how to create Web pages which are better than the average. That means understanding how Web pages work and that means being able to create them by typing them yourself! Once you are confident you should probably explore the easier alternatives but by then you may find (like many other competent Web developers) that you prefer to stick with a way which lets you control the page precisely.
