Note the capital I. There is only one Internet. It was called that because it is a way of interconnecting many networks together across the world. It is made up of:
- servers - computers which serve data to other computers
- routers - which direct the data to where it is going
- cables and other things - which carry the electrical signals which are the data
- hosts - other computers which are using the Internet (they may also be servers)
There are many definitions and histories of the Internet out there if you want to know more.
The Internet is the hardware which connects many millions of computers together globally in a complex web of interconnections. Unfortunately, the word web might be misleading because the Internet is NOT the Worldwide Web. That comes next!
